RootTiler for X
RootTiler is a tool for placing images onto the root window of the X Window System. The tool will read one or more image files from disk and place them to a position specified through command line arguments.
For the moment this tool won't work with GNOME or KDE 'cause they are overlapping the root window with their own desktop layers. If you know a solution for this issue please let me know it and feel free to send me patches! :-)
The program expects that the current background is accessible through the _XROOTPMAP_ID property of the root window. Usually this is the case when the background was set through a tool like Esetroot from the Eterm package or fvwm-root. More information about _XROOTPMAP_ID and its use can be found in the Eterm Technical Reference.
$ xprop -root | grep _XROOTPMAP_ID _XROOTPMAP_ID(PIXMAP): pixmap id # 0x600001 $ roottiler --image RED.png --x 200 --y 500 \ --next --image GREEN.png --x 300 --y 370 \ --next --image BLUE.png --x 500 --y 550
